More than 300 years ago, British entrepreneur Charles Povey founded the Sun Fire Office, one of the world’s first fire insurance companies.
What began as a pioneering venture later grew into a diverse, global insurance provider.
Though its name would change over the centuries, its purpose would stay the same. It helped people protect what mattered to them.
Today, that purpose lives on in Intact Insurance’s founding principle. We help people, businesses and society prosper in good times and be resilient in bad times.
We insured Charles Darwin's home in Kent, Down House, in 1844. Darwin paid £1 and 13 shillings a year for £2,100 of cover.
Charles Povey and Sun Insurance created the first ever insurance cover for contents in and out of a property.
We insured the dockyards in Belfast, where the Titanic was built.
