Creating new paths: Celebrating women's career journeys

In recognition of International Women’s Day on 8 March, we’re celebrating the remarkable women across our company whose journeys show resilience, reinvention, and the courage to build new futures.

Today, we share the inspiring story of Cevriye Berkcan Turkmen, Automation Tester at Intact Insurance. Cevriye's path has taken her from law in Turkey to technology in the UK, and ultimately to a meaningful role within Intact Insurance.

From law school in Turkey to the corporate world

“After graduating from Law School in Turkey, I spent four years in a law firm before moving into the corporate world and the insurance industry. Throughout this time, I managed bodily injury legal and claims processes. I also worked closely with IT teams on digital transformation projects, and it was the first experience that made me realise how much I enjoyed structured, technology driven work.”

A new life in London and a turning point

“When my husband received a job offer in London, we chose to relocate as a family. Starting a new life in a different country—with a language barrier, a young child, and without our familiar support network—was incredibly challenging. Not long after, we welcomed our second child, and shortly afterwards the COVID pandemic began. It was a demanding period both emotionally and practically, but it also gave me the space to reflect on what direction I wanted my career to take.”

Reinventing a career through learning

“During that time at home, I made the decision to reinvent myself. I enrolled in an intensive, almost year long automation testing bootcamp. I learned Java and automation tools from scratch, dedicating several hours each day to study while joining full day live sessions every Saturday. Balancing this with family life was not easy, but it became one of the most meaningful chapters of my life. Graduating early by submitting my final project ahead of time was a personal milestone that reminded me of what perseverance can achieve.”

Early experience and the search for new opportunities

“With a reference from one of my instructors, I briefly secured a remote role with a US-based company. However, the time difference made it difficult to maintain alongside caring for two small children, so I began searching for opportunities within the UK.”

Joining Intact Insurance and finding belonging

“That’s when I joined Intact Insurance. I have been here for 2.5 years, working as an Automation Tester. I feel genuinely grateful to be part of Intact Insurance — for the supportive leadership, the collaborative team culture, and the sense of belonging I have found here.”

Continuous learning and new aspirations

“Alongside my role, I continue to work on improving my English every day. I am also developing a growing interest in cyber security, and I have been watching training videos and exploring learning materials in this area to broaden my understanding and skills.”

A message for anyone considering a new career path

“My journey — from law in Turkey to technology in the UK — has shown me that starting again is possible at any stage of life. With resilience, courage, and the right support, it’s always possible to build a new path. I hope my story encourages others who may be considering a non traditional or uncertain career transition.”
